New York State Medical Treatment Guidelines for Superficial Heat and Cold in workers compensation patients

The New York State workers compensation board has developed these guidelines to help physicians, podiatrists, and other healthcare professionals provide appropriate treatment for Superficial Heat and Cold.

These Workers Compensation Board guidelines are intended to assist healthcare professionals in making decisions regarding the appropriate level of care for their patients with ankle and foot disorders. The guidelines are not a substitute for clinical judgement or professional experience. The ultimate decision regarding care must be made by the patient in consultation with his or her healthcare provider.

Superficial Heat and Cold of Shoulder Injury

Applied in a variety of ways, thermal agents such as superficial heat and cold therapy adjusting body temperature to reduce pain, inflammation, and/or other symptoms effusion brought on by an injury or brought on by exertion. It can be applied severely with elevation and compression.

Acute discomfort, edema, bleeding, the need to lower muscle spasm and promote stretching and flexibility are all indications. includes units for portable cryotherapy. may be delivered by the patient on their own or in conjunction with other active therapy.

  • Immediate time for effect to manifest
  • Two to five times a week, on average.
  • Maximum duration: three weeks as a primary, or longer for adhesive capsulitis if administered intermittently as an adjuvant to other treatment methods (Refer to Section D.2, Adhesive Capsulitis.)
  • Two months is the maximum time frame.
